Greater St. Louis Citizen's Committee for Nuclear Information
The Greater St. Louis Citizen’s Committee for Nuclear Information was an organization formed for the purpose of the education of the poorly-informed public on the dangers of nuclear testing. Founded by Barry Commoner, Dr. Louise Reiss, her husband, and other scientists and doctors at Washington University, group members such as Commoner would lecture small audiences in short and simple talks. Besides this, the grouping of intellectuals created an atmosphere of curiosity and concern. Therefore, the scientists, in addition to the lectures, began to do what they do best; go out into the field, collect data, and analyze it. A reporter for the New York Times wrote that “in addition to its public information activities, the St. Louis Committee in December of 1958 initiated the the world’s first baby tooth survey” (Unknown Author, Explaining Radiation: Scientists in 2 Cities Set Up Groups to Inform Public on Facts in Simple Talks). This was the influential group that was responsible for the creation and the actions of the Baby Tooth Survey.
